Tagalog phonology: the "Bisaya" Phenomenon
September 6, 2008This is a normal phenomenon in Tagalog, commonly labeled by Tagalogs as “Visayan Pronunciation”; so called since this phenomenon is almost always associated by Filipinos to the Visayan languages, and are generally spoken by the Visayan people and provincial Tagalogs. Although, this is also viewed as deregatory to some. This phonological phenomenon in Tagalog is generally considered as wrong and a mispronunciation, and is as follows:
- Pronouncing “e” within non-final syllables as /i/. Examples: mesa [ˈmɛsʰa] → [ˈmisʰa]
- Pronouncing “o” within non-final syllables as /ʉ̞/. Examples: eroplano [ɛˈɾopˌlano] → [iˈɾʉ̞pˌlano]
