Buo
Here is an exception to an exception, the Tagalog “buo” (whole). It is an exception to the rule in which “oo” vowel clusters never transform to “uo” or “uu”. However, traditionally, buo was spelt as boo. It was just that it got corrupted in time. It is pronounced as /ˈbʉ̞oʔ/. Butete & balete
You might have also noticed that these words contradict the rule in which “e” is not used in native terms. Why are they spelt this way then? They are derived from Spanish. Err, no! Butete [bʉ̞ˈtiteʔ] and balete [baˈliteʔ] are native terms! They are, along with babae (woman), the few remaining Spanish-orthography spelt terms in popular use; though butiti and baliti exist, they are very rare, although those are the correct spelling. So, I just advise you to use the correct spelling.
Finalisation
Finally, you might occasionally read, panget (ugly), kanen (rice), tite (penis) and many other reproductive organs, which don’t agree with the rules I’ve shown you. Why is this then? They are mispelt! Simple! Tagalogs themselves, especially in informal and conversational writing, make those mistakes, and even sometimes, intentionally. Just compare it to how average Englishmen make mistakes on the spellings of their own language.
