Tagalog orthography: exceptions
August 2, 2008Here are the exceptions to the rules presented in http://felipeaira.i.ph/blogs/felipeaira/2008/06/22/tagalog-orthography/.
oo
The “oo” vowel cluster is common in Tagalog words. This is an exception to the rule where “o” may only exist at the last syllable. This is only applicable to Tagalog since other Philippine languages using the Tagalog orthography don’t follow this just like the Cebuano tibuok (all). The cluster is pronounced almost of the the time as /ʊˈʔo/, and if within the word, like kaginoohan (nobility) it is pronounced as /ʊˈʔʊ/.
babae
The Tagalog babae (girl) is never spelled as “babai“. Why then? It’s one of the very few words in Tagalog that still follows the Spanish orthography, and even in the old Spanish orthography it could have never been spelt as babai since that would mean that it would be pronounced as /ba’baɪ/ which is not the correct pronunciation.
Spanish-derived terms
When Spanish-derived terms are Tagalisized, most of the times, the “e” does not become “i” neither the “o” becomes “u” only the letter such as z → s, v → b, c → k/s, q → k, ch → ts and many others. That is why in Tagalog the word for “aeroplane” is eroplano [ɛˈɾoplano] not iruplano. However, common everyday-use Spanish-derived terms use fully the Tagalog orthography, like peso → piso and cebollas → sibuyas. U’s that were originally “o” in the Spanish orthography are pronounced as /ʊ/, like kumusta [kʊˈmʊsta] from Spanish como está.
